about
Her Tone is a song toying with concepts such as fate & destiny, asking myself questions like: are things suppossed to happen if/when they do? And: do my actions determine the path I will carve out for myself? etc. Causehave you ever experienced something that can set the entire tone or mood for the day? You just know things will go smoothly? Or precisely not? Yeah... same. Of course I had to romanticize this narrative & make a song about it. In this particular story, God is setting that tone. It's no longer in my hands (if it ever was). For the artwork, I really wanted to create my own image of God & I choose Her to be curvaceous, black woman with an afro. To me this is a very powerful image, far stronger than the imagery we've been fed our entire lives. For this piece I reached out to the amazing Lola Vogels to help me visualize what I had in mind. So now you know the backstory, I present to you, "Her Tone."
lyrics
Yeah, I really felt like the time stopped when I met ya
Our eyes locked, I freezed up like a fucking statue
Was in the middle of my way to get some fastfood
I think God set the tone for us yeah
Both too busy, no time left to get accquianted
Plus the lovers that we've been with left us both tainted
We going back & forth, make sure we're compatible
Your mind, body & soul incredible yeah
That's all a brother gotta know to get the picture
Can I really spend some time now witcha?
I just know that fate doesn't come in complex scriptures
It's quite simple, quite literal in the common sense
(Ay) I don't know what you got in store
Let me take out on tour
Show you my life on roads
That's all I've ever known
I don't know what you got in store
Let me take out on tour
Show you my life on rhodes
That's all I've ever known
You're divine fine when I scroll my timeline
It's about time to get off the side line
Put me on, it's time to play another league yeah
First class, move me up another seat yeah
I remember show dates up in London that was crazy
Asian cuisine up in Soho with my baby
Just talking bout the climate & consider how we're lately
Just thinking bout building us a bunker for the safety
And ride this all out
Watch the rain fall, right 'fore the drought now
This life ain't what I'm all about but
I think God set the tone for us yeah
Yeah, just ride it all out
Watch the rain fall, right 'fore the drought now
This life ain't what I'm all about but
I think God set the tone for us yeah
I don't know what you got in store
Let me take out on tour
Show you my life on roads
That's all I've ever known
I don't know what you got in store
Let me take out on tour
Show you my life on rhodes
That's all I've ever known
I don't know what you got in store
Let me take out on tour
Show you my life on roads
That's all I've ever known
I don't know what you got in store
Let me take out on tour
Show you my life on rhodes
That's all I've ever known
What we gotta do to control our lives
Wake another day, you might see the signs
They just want you to fall in line
U and I, we're just the same
What we gotta do to control our lives
Wake another day, you might see the signs
They just want you to fall in line
U and I, we're just the same
